McCormick Branch to temporarily close on August 24 for major renovation project
The McCormick Branch will temporarily close to the public beginning Monday, August 24, 2026, as work begins on an extensive renovation that will transform the branch into a modern, flexible space designed to meet the evolving needs of the community.
The renovation will create an enhanced library experience with exciting new features, including:
- A maker space for hands-on creativity and learning
- An expanded children’s area designed for young readers and families
- New study rooms for individual and group use
- A dedicated program room to support a wide range of library events, workshops, and activities
“We’re thrilled to begin this exciting transformation of the McCormick Branch,” said Kelly Kipfer, CEO of Waterloo Public Library. “These renovations will create a bigger, bolder branch that reflects how our community uses the library today and how it will grow into the future. The new spaces will provide more opportunities to learn, create, connect, and discover, and we’re looking forward to welcoming everyone back to a branch that is even more responsive to the needs of our community.”
Temporary Pop-Up Library will be offered during McCormick Branch closure
While construction is underway, limited library services will continue through a convenient pop-up library located within the Albert McCormick Community Centre.
The pop-up library will be available beginning Monday, September 14 and visitors will be able to:
- Borrow and browse a curated selection of books and other library materials
- Access public computers
- Participate in a variety of library programs
Library customers are encouraged to check the library’s website and social media channels for updates on construction progress, pop-up library hours, and programming throughout the renovation period.
The McCormick Branch is expected to re-open in early 2028. “We thank the community for its patience and support as this exciting project gets underway,” says Kipfer.
