20 Great Baby Books for New Parents

Guest Blogger: Miriam

Several months ago, my colleague and his wife welcomed their first baby into the world. Prior to her arrival, I attended a baby shower for the parents-to-be and, as is becoming more common, the host requested each guest bring a book for baby’s library. As a librarian and toddler mom, I started going through my mental list of favourites. I wanted to avoid anything too popular to avoid gifting a duplicate (I’m looking at you, Robert Munsch’s Love You Forever) and I also knew I wanted to select a board book as they are a wee bit easier for tiny hands to grip.

I settled on What a Wonderful World by Bob Thiele – a vibrantly illustrated book, set to the lyrics of Louis Armstrong’s famous ballad. It’s become a bedtime favourite that we read/sing on repeat. A fun thing about babies and toddlers is that they love repetition – so if you’re stuck reading the same books over and over, they better be enjoyable. To that end, I made a list of my favourite books that I think any family will be happy to read again and again… and again.

This list is by no means all encompassing and with so many incredible books out there and new books getting published every day, I’m sure I’ll have some new books on repeat before long! Still not sure you have found the right one? Come on down to the library and check a few out for a test drive.
