Library Code of Conduct Policy

 

Purpose

Waterloo Public Library is committed to creating and maintaining a safe and welcoming environment that fosters positive library visits. We believe everyone who uses the library does so with the best intentions and both staff and customers play a part in creating a welcoming space.

We value and treat all library users with respect and dignity. Staff make every effort to apply the Library Code of Conduct in an equitable manner for the benefit of all.

Policy

To help us create a welcome environment, customers are expected to do the following.

Be Considerate of Others

• Be considerate of the tone, content and volume of your conversations and activities including cell phone usage.
• Take responsibility and attend to those in your care during your visit.
• Use headphones when listening to audio on phones, devices and computers.
• Follow the instructions of library staff.
• Report disruptive behavior to a Waterloo Public Library staff member immediately.
• Don’t interfere with another customer’s use and enjoyment of the Library, or with staff in performing work.

Communicate with Respect

• Assume positive intent and believe others are trying their best.
• Abusive, harassing, and violent behaviour which includes yelling or swearing is not permitted.

Use Library Spaces, Equipment and Materials for Their Intended Purposes

• Enjoy Library property and materials as intended, without destruction, damage, defacement and theft.
• Keep personal belongings with you at all times. The Library is not responsible for theft or damage to personal property.
• Leave bikes and other wheeled items in designated areas outside, excluding strollers and mobility devices.
• Wear appropriate attire, including shirts and footwear.
• Service animals accompanying a person with a disability are welcome in all public areas. Other animals are not permitted. Where an animal’s disability-related purpose is not readily apparent, staff may request documentation from a regulated health professional. Any animal in the library must remain under the handler’s control and supervision at all times.
• Food and drinks in closed-lid containers are permitted throughout the library, except in areas as posted.
• Tidy up after yourself and clear away all waste materials.
• Refrain from soliciting, canvassing, or unauthorized selling. This includes but is not limited to canvassing for political or religious causes, soliciting participation in any survey, questionnaire or business activity, and selling or engaging in any commercial activity.
• Use of tobacco, vapes, marijuana, alcohol or illicit drugs both in and around the Library is not permitted.

Respect the Privacy of Others

• Filming and photography is permitted in the Library. Out of respect for others, kindly ask permission before including community members and/or staff before including them in videos or photos.

Any behaviour that does not support a welcoming environment and/or violates the Library Code of Conduct may result in cost-recovery charges, suspension of library privileges, exclusion from the Library on the basis of the Ontario Trespass to Property Act and prosecution.
