Purpose

To describe the rationale for providing programming at the Library.

Policy

Waterloo Public Library offers programming that supports its purpose to fulfill the multiple literacy needs of our community.

Developing multiple literacies is central to programming at the Library. From traditional literacies to new technology based competencies, Waterloo Public Library programs respond to the need of all citizens to build these basic skills.

In addition to its key literacy building mandate, programs are designed to support the Library’s strategic direction, highlight the collections and complement other Library services. Programs endeavor to engage participants in hands on learning and discovery. Through special events, workshops and weekly program formats, participants are exposed to new ideas and opportunities. Waterloo Public Library transforms lives and provides a gathering place and community for those who love to learn.

Programs are provided free of charge. Occasionally there may be a nominal fee charged for consumables.

The Library may choose to co-sponsor programs with other organizations or individuals when the purpose of the program is in keeping with the goal, purpose and strategic direction of the Library and can be supported by the resources available.

Community needs and interests are fundamental to program selection and development. The public is encouraged to suggest topics for future programming or changes to existing programs. These suggestions will be considered in light of programming criteria, current strategic direction and available resources.

The Library uses an evaluation process to determine the effectiveness of a program and invites customer feedback on programs through a variety of methods.
