Statement on Race and Social Equity

As leaders of North America’s public libraries, we are committed to achieving racial and social equity by contributing to a more just society in which all community members can realize their full potential. Our libraries can help achieve true and sustained equity through an intentional, systemic and transformative library-community partnership. Our library systems are working to achieve equity in the communities we serve by:

  1. Eliminating racial and social equity barriers in library programs, services, policies and practices
  2. Creating and maintaining an environment of diversity, inclusion and respect both in our library systems and in all aspects of our community role

  • Program & Event Specialist

    Program & Event Specialist

    Eastside Branch / Full-Time Permanent / 35 hours per week

    We’re looking for a creative and community-minded individual with experience developing and delivering programs and events to join our team. In this role, you’ll bring ideas to life from concept to execution, creating engaging and inclusive experiences for a diverse range of ages and interests. If you’re a collaborative team player who is passionate about learning, community connection, and making the library a welcoming place to explore and participate, this could be the next step you’re looking for!

    What You’ll Do:

    • Conceive, create, facilitate and evaluate effective library programs and events across all ages in a variety of formats, including in-person, virtually and on/off site.
    • Assist in building and maintaining community partner relationships and represent the library at community events.
    • Provide excellent customer service, circulation support, and reader’s advisory to customers of all ages, helping create a welcoming and positive library experience.
    • Support customers with information, technology, and digital resources by using good judgment to respond to questions, service issues, and day-to-day needs.
    • Promote WPL’s services, resources, and learning opportunities, and help connect customers with relevant information, tools, and library offerings.
    • Assist with the hiring of Summer Reading Club students and facilitation of Summer Reading Club.
    • Act as person in charge (PIC) at branch locations.

    What We’re Looking For:

    • Post-secondary degree or diploma plus 2 years’ experience developing and delivering programs. Education in child development, recreation and leisure, or human services is preferred.
    • Collaborative team-player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Strong technology literacy, with confidence to support customers with technology, and the ability to explain digital tools and concepts clearly.
    • Program delivery experience across a range of ages and topics is an asset.
    • Exceptional customer service skills, with a clear commitment to creating a welcoming, positive, inclusive and customer-first environment.
    • Strong judgement and critical thinking, with the ability to listen carefully, assess customer needs and respond appropriately.
    • Flexible with scheduling to accommodate programs and events and ability travel to various locations in Waterloo.
    • Satisfactory vulnerable sector check is required and a condition of hire.

    Schedule

    The regular schedule will be Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays 9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., Wednesdays 1:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays (alternating on a weekly basis) 9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Schedules are subject to change.

    The ability to work at any of our library locations is required. Flexibility outside these times for scheduled events is required.

    Salary/Wage/Benefits

    The starting annual salary is $57,930.60

  • Library Assistant (McCormick Branch)

    Library Assistant

    McCormick Branch / Part-Time Permanent / 16 hours per week

    We’re looking for an individual who is curious, approachable, and passionate about connecting others with knowledge. At WPL, Library Assistants play a hands-on role in welcoming and supporting our diverse community from young children to lifelong learners. This position is centred on creating a positive customer experience, using good judgment to respond to a wide range of needs, and helping make the library an engaging, accessible, and supportive place for everyone.

    This role has a particular focus on evening service, when the branch often welcomes local students and youth. We are looking for someone who is confident connecting with middle-school aged kids and teens, building rapport and trust, and creating a welcoming environment for them as well as other WPL customers. Sound like you?

    What You’ll Do:

    • Provide excellent customer service, reader’s advisory and circulation services for customers of all ages.
    • Conduct reference interviews to understand customer needs and connect them with accurate information and relevant resources.
    • Support customers with technology in the library by confidently assisting and educating them on WPL’s current and emerging maker technology, digital tools, resources, devices and services.
    • Use sound judgement in responding to customer questions, service issues and day-to-day situations knowing when to problem-solve independently and when to seek support.
    • Promote WPL, its services, and its resources, helping customers discover opportunities to learn, explore, and engage with the library.
    • Contribute to an environment that encourages curiosity, learning and digital confidence for both customers and staff.

    What We’re Looking For:

    • Post-secondary diploma or degree plus at least 1 year of customer service experience working directly with the public. Experience working with youth or teens is strongly preferred.
    • Exceptional customer service skills, including the ability to create a welcoming, positive, inclusive, customer-first environment while using sound judgment and critical thinking to assess needs and respond appropriately.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English, with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with customers and colleagues. Proficiency in a language other than English is considered an asset.
    • Flexible and collaborative, with a proactive, team-oriented mindset and a willingness to adapt to changing service needs.
    • Strong technology literacy, with confidence to support customers with technology, and the ability to explain digital tools and concepts clearly.
    • A genuine interest in learning, curiosity, and desire to help others learn.

    Schedule

    The regular schedule will be Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. In September, 2026, the hours will change to 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on the same evenings.

    Schedules are subject to change. The ability to work at any library location and flexibility to pick up additional shifts where needed is required.

    The starting wage is $29.36 per hour (level D).
