Diwali, or Deepavali (“row of lights”) is observed in many countries around the world and within the religions of Hinduism, Jainism and Sikhism. It is the festival of lights and it marks the victory of good over evil. While celebrations differ across regions and traditions, Diwali often includes the lighting of diyas (oil lamps), candles and lanterns, along with visiting with family and friends and feasting. Diwali occurs in the fall, on the darkest day during the Hindu month of Kartik (mid-October to mid-November).
