Terry Brooks

Born in Illinois, Brooks received an undergraduate degree in English literature and a graduate degree in law. A writer since high school, Brooks covered all the genres until he read The Lord of the Rings, which changed him forever. He then wrote and published The Sword of Shannara in 1977, which became the first work of fiction ever to appear on the New York Times trade paperback bestseller list, where it remained for months.
