Parents and Caregivers
As a parent, what do I need to know about WPL memberships?
We believe it is essential for parents and guardians to take an active role in guiding their children’s use of the Library. Only a parent or a legal guardian may sign for a library card for a child.
Your signature on the library card application means you accept responsibility for returning whatever is borrowed, on time and in good condition. It also means that you will guide your child’s use of the library and its wide variety of resources.
Whoever presents the library card has access to the information on that borrowing record. Your privacy is protected as long as you keep possession of your family’s library cards. Retaining these cards lets you supervise their use.
A children’s card will only be able to access the internet workstations in the Children’s Department. An adult membership card is required to use the internet workstations in the Adult Department. View the library’s computer and internet use policy.
Do you have programs for children?
We have many free programs at the Main Library, the McCormick Branch and (coming soon!) the John M. Harper Branch for children from newborn to 12 years of age. Some of the programs require registration while others are drop-in. The details are listed in each program description which may be found here or obtained at the Library. If you have any questions please call the Main Library 519-886-1310 ext. 129, the McCormick Branch 519-886-1310 ext. 213 or the John M. Harper Branch 519-886-1310 ext. 310.
Are there materials at WPL to help me raise my children?
Yes. WPL’s adult collections boast a large selection of books, magazines, and videos on child rearing. In Children’s, there is also a special collection called The Parent Shelf. Topics include pregnancy, prenatal care, fatherhood, child development, raising children with special needs, behavior and discipline of children, games and activities for pre-schoolers, school and reading readiness, and conflict resolution.
The Library also offers free use of the Internet, where many excellent pregnancy, parenting and health sites may be found.
