About Let’s Read

Let’s Read was launched at Word on the Street in 2009.   This family literacy program program began with a grant from The Frank Cowan Foundation.   With this grant, Waterloo Public Library, Kitchener Public Library, Cambridge Libraries and Galleries, Region of Waterloo Library and Project READ Literacy Network came together to plan Let’s Read.   The goal of the program is to get the families of Waterloo Region reading - reading the same book, reading together as a family and reading together as a community.
The first 2 years of the program have been a great success with story times, contests and special events held in public libraries throughout the region.   This year we’ve added three new partners in Words Worth Books, the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery and Our Place Family Resource and Early Years Centre.

The official launch of the 2011 Let’s Read program was on Sunday, September 25, 2011 at Word on the Street in Victoria Park. Hundreds of kids and their families came to make buttons and hear about the program. Members of the Waterloo Siskins hockey team and their mascot, Captain Crunch, helped us to officially launch the program. The Siskins also handed out free tickets for a Waterloo Siskins hockey game and cheered on our choice of a hockey-themed title. Thank you Siskins. You were great!

The 2011 Let’s Read pick is The Farm Team. From the award-winning team of Linda Bailey and Bill Slavin and packed with on-ice action and laughs, this is a picture book for hockey fans of every age.

Come to the library and sign out a copy of The Farm Team today. There is a free sticker with every book! Also check the Let’s Read blog for all of the fun Let’s Read activities happening throughout the region.
