Soon after natural gas wells were drilled near the Alberta home of Reverend Wiebo Ludwig and his clan, the Christian community started experiencing health problems. After five years of being ignored by the oil and gas industry, Ludwig decided to fight. The story of a man’s relentless struggle against powerful industry interests.

February 26 to March 3 is Freedom to Read Week in Canada.

2012 marks the 12th anniversary of this celebration. Libraries, schools, organizations and people passionate about books and reading take this time to celebrate the freedom of expression we as Canadians enjoy.

Each year, resources are “challenged”. Challenges are made by individuals, groups or agencies who are trying to prevent a particular work (that they personally find offensive) from being read by the general public. February is Customer Appreciation Month at WPL. Part of the celebrations include a Trivia Contest for our Twitter (”WaterlooLibrary”) followers and Facebook (”Waterloo Public Library (Ontario, Canada)”) followers and friends.

Starting February 6, a question will be posted on WPL’s Twitter and FB. Correct answers will be put in a draw for a daily prize. There will be a daily question (and a prize) up til and including February 29.

Prizes include books, CDs, and WPL merchandise. 1 prize per customer.

Hint: many of the answers may be found on the WPL website.

Canadian Points of View Reference Centre provides students and researchers with a series of essays that present multiple sides of a current issue. Broad categories covered include aboriginal people, animal welfare, bioethics, global issues, human rights, media, religion, technology and more. Each category includes coverage of a number of more specific topics. Topical coverage includes an overview (objective background/description), point (argument), counterpoint (opposing argument), and a corresponding Critical Thinking Guide.

Over the past few years, it has become a tradition at WPL to celebrate you (our customers) and a love of libraries. Special happenings this year at all three (3) branches include:

Colouring contest for kids. Colouring sheets are available at the library. The deadline to enter the contest is Wednesday, February 29 at 9:00pm.

What do you love about your library? Help yourself to a paper heart at the library. Write what you love about your library on the paper heart and receive a sweet treat (while supplies last). We will share customer’s responses in the spring issue of “Off the Shelf”.

Velocidad de disparo , sensibilidad a la luz (ISO) – Práctica con la camara.

Congratulations to the winners of the Teen Advisory Council’s Cup Art contest. We had over 30 very creative entries submitted which will soon be on display at the Harper Branch.

Entries for “The Hunger Games” writing contest are still being accepted. Entries must be original and no longer than 500 words. Participants must be between the ages of 13 and 18 .
