Get a Card
Residents of Waterloo & Kitchener
Library membership is free for anyone residing in Waterloo. Under WPL’s reciprocal borrowing program, members of the Kitchener, Cambridge, Region of Waterloo, Brant County and Hamilton Region public library systems can also join WPL for free. Individuals are expected to get a card from their own library system before joining WPL.
Memberships are renewed once a year with a quick confirmation of your personal information.
How Do I Get a Card?
Simply bring one (1) piece of identification with your name and current address to the library and we’ll provide you with a free membership.
Residents of Other Areas
For customers residing outside of the areas mentioned above, membership at WPL may still be obtained. Simply bring one (1) piece of identification with your name and current address to the library, and we’ll provide you with a card at a cost of $35.00 per year or $20.00 for 6 months.
Cards for Kids
Children of any age can get a library card – even babies! Children 12 years of age and under must have a parent or legal guardian sign the card.
University and College Students
Bring just one (1) piece of identification with your name and current address e.g. rent receipt or other proof of local address and we’ll provide you with a card.
In-Library Use Card
Waterloo residents without a permanent home address can get a free membership to reserve and borrow materials for in-library use.
Terms for All WPL Members
By signing the card you agree to return all items borrowed, pay for overdue materials, and pay replacement and processing costs for lost or damaged materials.
Your PIN Protects Your Privacy
Access to your account is protected by your PIN (Personal Identification Number). A numeric PIN is needed to place holds, to renew material online, to use self-checkout and to access online databases and services including Reading History and Preferred Searches.

Lost Cards
If your card is lost or stolen, please report it immediately. The replacement cost of a library card is $3.00. Identification with name and current address is required to obtain a replacement card.
